The peace and calm you breathe in the jungle, in the places where today's Maya live and where the ancient Maya built their flourishing culture, help you reconnect with yourself, with your whole being. These are unique places where nature, flora and fauna come together to create wonderful things.
It was right here that we met the Melipona bee: a domesticated, stingless bee, mystical and healing, with very special traits that make it unique.
The Melipona bee, or Sacred Maya Bee, is very selective
It pollinates only the most nutritious, most medicinal plants, which is why it produces a very special honey: a magical elixir with strong medicinal properties that has been used in Maya medicine since pre-Hispanic times to treat a variety of ailments and to care for the skin.
Melipona honey contains large amounts of vitamins and healing properties: antioxidant, moisturizing, wound-healing, bactericidal and antibiotic.
Melipona honey is produced exclusively in Maya communities, where Indigenous families look after and protect the hives. However, because of deforestation, the hives are collapsing and Melipona bees are in danger of extinction.
It's estimated that the number of hives has dropped by 93% over the last 25 years.
The Melipona bee is a national treasure. Its conservation represents the economic, cultural and natural wealth of Mexico and of the Indigenous peoples who represent it. We can't let it disappear. We must help conserve it, and we must consume its honey, a honey with diverse and powerful healing properties and priceless ancestral value.
